So many of our Beau-Port clients mention Mark’s attention to detail including Janet Oldham, who had a beautiful Shaker style kitchen installed and was thrilled with the higher worktops that Mark designed into the kitchen, to suit Janet and her husband’s heights.  A detail like this can make all the difference to how we use our kitchens and even feel after spending time preparing for meals.  A curved unit was also included into the design to give a more spacious and softer look and to also free up some space for Janet’s chair by the French doors looking out onto their garden.  As Janet Oldham said: “Other kitchen companies we looked at presented very standard designs, but Beau-Port created a very individual design for us.”  You could say it was ‘tailor-made’ for the Oldhams.

Clare spent time with another client helping her to select the right kind of chopping boards to fit neatly into a special storage place in the kitchen, while Mark came up with the ideal solution for a mobile laundry basket that has saved the same client endless trips up and down the stairs with armfuls of laundry and given her a means to move the family’s laundry ‘mountain’ effortlessly from A to B.  Mark also helped this client to make the most of the dramatic and beautiful views from their kitchen, simply by reconfiguring the layout of their dining table.

Mark certainly has an artist’s eye for balance of form and colour and uses this when helping clients to select the right colour tones and lighting to complement the space.  Lighting is another key detail that Beau-Port incorporates so well into so many of the kitchen designs, with concealed lighting under the counters and ‘floating’ shelves and when the main overhead LED lights are off, these secondary lights creates a really cosy atmosphere.

Many of our Beau-Port clients are commenting that they are now spending much more time in their kitchens, rather than sitting in front of their TV’s all evening, making for a more sociable and companionable lifestyle.  Amazing what powerful changes attention to detail can make!

Space has energy of its own and that energy can be restricted by bad design, objects blocking natural walkways and not enough thought going into how the space needs to be used.  All of these problems were inherited by one of Beau-Port’s clients who had moved into a beautiful house in Hampshire, which had a kitchen with three doorways leading into and out of the kitchen, a large set of French doors and a door to a walk in larder.

Thankfully Mark loves a challenge and successfully designed out all of these problems without having to move a single doorway!  Understanding how energy flows around space and objects takes the eye of an expert and one with experience in problem solving.   The client now has a kitchen that not only helps her go ‘with the flow’ but all of her family too.  It has even helped her with her need to be territorial around the food preparation area.  Mark created a separate area in the kitchen with another sink, wine cooler, tea and coffee preparation area and all next to the fridge freezer.  So when our client’s teenage children tumble into the kitchen looking for snacks and drinks, she is able to keep them at bay and away from her kitchen preparation central island area.

A special dresser unit was also designed close to the food preparation area for recipe books and an old broom cupboard has been turned into a phone booth, complete with the owner’s vintage telephone.
